What founders say

AM

Andrés Molina

Co-founder, Bogotá · Jun 2025

We did the First Steps Review about three months into building. I'd been going round in circles about the model and wasn't sure how much of that was normal uncertainty and how much was a real problem. The session helped me see it more clearly. The written summary was the part I kept coming back to — I shared it with my co-founder and it became the basis for a conversation we'd been avoiding.

The Build Companion arrangement was helpful in a way I didn't fully anticipate. It wasn't so much that the advice was transformative — it was more that having a regular session gave me a deadline to think things through before each meeting. The act of preparing for the session often clarified things more than the session itself. That said, the fortnightly rhythm was occasionally hard to keep when things got busy.

I came to the Readiness Study with a pitch deck I'd worked on for two months and a lot of anxiety about upcoming investor conversations. The rehearsal session at the end was genuinely valuable — having someone push back on my answers in a low-stakes context was exactly what I needed. The investor-facing document they produced was shorter and cleaner than anything I'd written myself.

What I appreciated most was that they didn't try to steer us toward a particular kind of outcome. We'd talked to other advisors who seemed to have a view on what success should look like before they'd heard anything about our business. Zaque was the opposite. They asked good questions and waited for us to figure out what we actually wanted before offering anything.

Founder, Barranquilla · Jun 2025

I'm based in Barranquilla so everything was done remotely. The video sessions worked fine. What struck me was how much they'd read the questionnaire before we met — they came in with specific observations and questions rather than starting from scratch. It saved time and made the sessions much more useful than I'd expected for something done online.

I was a bit nervous about the price transparency — I wasn't sure what I'd get for the money. After the First Steps Review I felt like it was fair. The two hours were dense and useful, and the written summary was longer and more detailed than I'd imagined. It's the kind of document I'd have paid more to have someone produce for me, honestly.

Case Studies

A few client journeys in detail

Case study 01

A founder who needed to slow down to move forward

First Steps Review

The situation

A founder four months into a B2B software product felt that every week brought a new priority. She was making decisions quickly but wasn't sure if she was building the right things. Revenue was minimal, the team was two people, and she needed someone to help her read the situation without judging the chaos.

What we did

The First Steps Review session focused on the business model and the decision-making rhythm rather than on specific features or roadmap items. We identified three things that actually mattered for the next 60 days and removed twelve others from the mental list she'd been carrying.

The outcome

Within six weeks, the founder had her first paying customer. She said afterward that naming the three priorities had made it easier to say no to everything else. The written summary she shared with her co-founder resolved a disagreement they'd had for weeks about which direction to focus on.

Case study 02

Preparing for an investor conversation that had been postponed twice

Readiness Study

The situation

A Bogotá-based consumer brand had been talking informally with a local angel group for several months. Two meetings had been scheduled and postponed because the founder didn't feel ready. The company had twelve months of revenue and a clear product, but no organized way to present the financials or the story.

What we did

The Readiness Study included a full review of the financials, three working sessions over four weeks, an investor-facing overview document, and a rehearsal session where we played the role of the investors. The founder answered roughly twenty questions she'd never had to put into words before.

The outcome

The investor meeting took place six weeks after the Readiness Study concluded. The founder reported that the rehearsal session was the most useful part — two of the questions the investors asked were almost identical to ones we'd practiced. The meeting led to a follow-up with a term sheet discussion.

Case study 03

A three-month companion arrangement for a company finding its rhythm

Build Companion

The situation

A professional services company based in Cali had been operating for fourteen months and had consistent revenue but an unclear sense of where to grow next. The founder was managing four people and felt like he was making decisions in isolation, even though the company was doing reasonably well.

What we did

The Build Companion arrangement over three months focused on a different theme each month: clarifying the offer in the first month, reviewing the team structure in the second, and setting direction for the following quarter in the third. Six fortnightly sessions with written summaries after each one.

The outcome

By the end of the three months, the company had refined its core offer to two service lines from four, hired one more person in a role that had been undefined for months, and had a plan for the next quarter that the whole team understood. The founder later told us the shared working plan had become the reference document he came back to weekly.
